Greetings to all and Happy New Year!

January 8, 2008

It’s been some time since I’ve been able to speak with all of you in person, and tonight will unfortunately be no exception. I hope the Holidays found everyone healthy with abundant opportunities to share quality time with family and friends.

The marching season seemed to come and go quickly, but not without Kennedy placing it’s name on several first place trophies including percussion and color guard! I’m extremely proud of the students, the BPA and new advisors for their diligence in remaining focused during this difficult time. Although the group is smaller in size this year, they continue to remain a serious contender in the competitive arena.

The concert portion of the program survived with several substitutes teachers and culminated in a nicely presented Holiday Program. My next substitute teacher, a former band student, will wave the baton and continue with the program in my absence.

My rehabilitation has been slow but steady with both my surgeon and physical therapists generally pleased with my progress. I’m able to tolerate outpatient physical therapy 3x a week working on rebuilding the muscles that were weakened through severe atrophy. For several weeks, I had a CPM machine at home to build the range of motion (ROM) of both legs. My flexibility has improved significantly, although full ROM has yet to be achieved. I still use a walker and wheelchair for daily activities at home and a transportation company provides rides to and from the Kessler Rehab Center. While there, a variety of activities are engaged with a concentration on building strength in my legs. They include exercises with ankle weights, recumbent cycling, leg presses, a variety of isometric exercises, and most recently, starting to use a quad cane to help manage steps. The alternate days are filled with completing a home exercise program developed for me to maintain my progress. I hope to see the second floor of my home soon! It’s been an emotional rollercoaster ride for me, however I can finally see a dim light at the end of the tunnel. Your support and prayers have been an inspiration to my motivation in this difficult time. Thank you all!

Between rehab visits and home therapy, I’ve been working on plans for a spring trip for the marching band. Trip dates were difficult to select because of the locations offered, conflicts with school concerts, the chorus trip and the Junior Cotillion. This year the trip will be to Williamsburg, VA the third weekend in April. I hope to have full details in a couple of weeks and send general information home before the end of the month. I’m trying to keep the estimated cost at or below last years trip figure. This date is early in the spring, however, I’m confident all preparations can be completed within the window of deadlines needed. All plans as in the past are pending the approval of the Board of Education.

Please continue with your fundraising projects and be sure that your child’s student account is up to date. Your anticipated cooperation in completing and returning all paper work on time is greatly appreciated and will help us avoid any late fees or the elimination of your child from the trip. Remember deadlines and due dates are firm not friendly reminders!

Our uniform project is a go. Each student has been measured to ensure a “perfect” fit and all design details and revisions have been completed. We anticipate delivery in early Spring. I’m anticipating showcasing the new Kennedy look for the Township St. Patrick’s Day Parade in March.

I wish I could be here to address you personally, however please know that I am still working to provide a rewarding musical experience for your children. Good luck with the remaining fundraising projects and be proud of your children…they are the best!

Musically,

KH
