On Sunday, October 15 the John F. Kennedy Marching Mustangs competed in the Carteret High School USSBA Marching Band Competition. Throughout the marching season, the Mustangs worked very hard in preparation for this competition. They endured hours upon hours of practicing drill and music to make sure everything would be perfect for this special performance. The practices were tough, but beneficial to the band and drill; common mistakes were corrected and the show fine tuned with new horn flashes and angles. Despite the constant reassurance from Mr. Hunt and Zyril that the band was more than ready for the competition, most of the band members were still very nervous. Many of the Marching Mustangs are new to the band and did not know what to expect at their first competition. The morning of the performance at Carteret, the band practiced less than usual in order to save energy for later. Zyril gave his final pep talk, telling the band,"We're ready. We can do this." and Mr. Hunt coined the band's new motto for this year: "Eyes? With Pride!" The director told the Marching Mustangs that anything could be achieved as long as you have pride. As the Kennedy Mustangs took the field for competition, they were greeted by a very large and very loud parent audience. This last boost of confidence from their most devoted supporters was the last boost of confidence the band needed. The Kennedy band achieved their best performance of the season. The Mustangs ended up taking first place in Division III with a score of 79.95, a score that was merely 4.65 points behind the highest score. They received many positive comments from the judges on both the recorded and written commentaries. "Yes! Yes! Yes! Great Job!" said the Ensemble Music Performance judge, while the Music Overall Effect judge complimented the band with "Good sound production!" The most meaningful compliment, though, was the Musical Performance judge who said, "Great quality of sound! Training Shows!" The JFK Marching Mustangs are very proud of the work they have done. Their training ought to show in their performances because they have trained harder than ever before.
