On Being Chosen to Attend Inauguration

As you may already be aware of, our very own Director's Assistant Kelly Sullivan was chosen to attend President George W. Bush's inauguration on Wednesday January 20th. As band reporter, I had the opportunity to interview her about her selection to witness this historical moment.

Robert Cacioppo: Congratulations on being selected to attend the inauguration. How did you get chosen to go
to there?

Kelly Sullivan: I had to fill out an application, but in order to get the application, I had to complete a week in D.C. for Presidential Classroom last summer.

RC: What exactly did you do at the Presidential Classroom?

KS: The whole program is an inside look at the > government. We got to meet our senators, our  representatives, we met the secretary of transportation, we got to sit on the floor at the House of Representatives, we got a tour of the White House, where we got to see the First Dog, and we got to do a bunch of special things that can't do as an everyday tourist in D.C.

RC: What kinds of special things?

KS: We got to go into a military base, not everyone can go into a military base. We got to have a picnic inside the military base, we got to sit on the wall of the Potomac River and watch the fireworks on the Fourth of July, and we saw a performance by Capital Steps, which is a group that made fun of the government, like they made fun of what was at the time the upcoming election and Hilary Clinton's new book. We will get to see the inauguration up close (good seats), we'll get to see the inaugural parade, and our own inaugural ball.

RC: What was on the application you had to fill out?

KS: What my GPA is, what activities I'm involved in, and any awards that I've won.

RC: You must have had a successful career in high school to be chosen for this, then. What activities do you participate in, and what awards have you won?

KS: Marching band (duh), concert band, National Honor Society, peer leadership, senior prom committee, and the golf team. As for awards, I was placed on the National Honor Roll.

RC: Do you know how many other students across the country are going to the inauguration?

KS: I don't know how many are going to the inauguration, but at the Presidential Classroom there were just over 500 students.

RC: Are you excited to be able to experience this?

KS: Yeah, I'm excited to be able to go.

RC: Even though this puts your high school perfect attendance record in jeopardy, are you willing to miss a few days for this event?

KS: Yes, because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I won't get another chance to do this.

RC: Congratulations, and have fun.
